Diary of Annie Eliza Dean (1842 - 1896) Portrait of Griggsville 1842 - 1896 Introduction The oldest of eight children born to Henry Elisha and Mary Lorentz Cohenour Dean, Ann Eliza "Annie Eliza" Dean was born on October 29, 1842. This book is hers, transcribed from her diary. The diary opens in October of 1863, on Annie's 21st birthday. At this time, she lives in a household of nine. Her youngest sibling, Charles, is just one year old. One brother, Harvey, has been dead for more than seven years. The United States is at war with itself, and many of her cousins, neighbors, and close associates are serving in the Union Army. As a woman of the mid nineteenth century, Ann did not have many of the blessings and opportunities that women today enjoy. Her lot was to wait and hope. And when there was no hope, she worked and served to the best of her capacity. Five years before the diary opens, Annie joined a local church and set herself on a course to becoming a faithful Christian. Her imperfections, whatever they were, caused her concern. At the beginning of each new year, she looked back over the good and bad of the year, made a private accounting and resolved to do better. Throughout her life, she sought strength from her Father in Heaven, and expressed gratitude for His many blessings to her. There was much of loss and suffering in Annie's life. Many friends and family members (herself included) suffered through Scarlet Fever and other illnesses of that day. Her "Dear Andrew [Jackson]" died in Huntsville, Alabama, just months before the end of the Civil War. Three years later, she developed scrafola, a form of tuberculosis, that plagued her the rest of her life. Still unmarried at the age of 28, she fretted that she would never have a home of her own (she did not) and that she would not be remembered. As a service to each of her brothers and sisters, she set about to piece a quilt "to keep to remember me when I am dead and gone." This is Annie's story, in her own words, however brief. It is a story of the daily tasks of washing, ironing, cleaning, cooking, and of seasonal planting and harvesting, of births and marriages and burials. It is, in short, a story of life. In that, we all share. Her diary was meant for her own reflection, and that makes all of us who read these words intruders to some extent. As one who keeps a journal, I respect the risk she took in putting onto paper her hopes, fears, and follies. I am grateful for her words, and for those who have had a hand in passing them along to me. Her brief entries have given me a view to another age. These words are more enduring than her best made quilts. They are the fabric of her life, stitched into a pattern we can share through many generations. Because Ann never married, she has no descendants to claim this history as their own. She is, however, the niece of my third great grandmother. Our common grandparents make us cousins, albeit removed. Through that link, I claim some right (but more privilege) to share her voice. To help us better follow her story, I have provided full names, where I could identify individuals through other records of that time, census records primarily. My contributions are contained in brackets [ ] so that you may see her words as her own.
